Mr Adeniran said the African Statistics Day which is celebrated Annually on the 18th of November was to create awareness about the role that statistics play in the economy and good governance in every country in Africa.
“We are marking the African statistics day which is set aside to create awareness about the role that statistics can play in the economy and good governance in every country in Africa. for this year, the theme for this year chosen across countries in Africa is to use data ecosystem to support the government in the implementation of the African continental Free Trade Agreement which Nigeria is one of the signatories to that agreement”.
“The federal government set up implementation committee which are already in touch with the NBS to see how we can work together and collaborate with them to ensure that we put in place data that can be used to measure the performance of government in the implementation of that agreement”.
“We are joining other national statistics offices to celebrate this day. The actual date is November 18 of every year but because it fell on a Saturday that was why we shifted it today to have more of our staff and members of the statistical system participate”.
We want to create awareness to the general public about the fact that there is a need for us to use statistics for planning, there is a need for the government to make use of data to formulate policy and also to drive home the fact that there is a need for us to get the cooperation from all Nigerians when our staff are on the field to collect data be it at the household level or the company or establishment level”.
The 2023 theme is Modernising Data Ecosystem to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the role of official statistics and Big Data in the Economic Transformation and Sustainable development of Africa.
The Director of Public Planning of the NBS Mallam Ibrahim Noma Wakili said the use of statistical reports in the African continent is low as compared to other parts of the world which underscores the need to create more awareness on the African statistics day
