A boat has capsized in the River Benue at Anyeci area of Benue State, causing the deaths of at least 20 persons.
The boat, which was conveying fishermen from Ibi and Wukari local government areas of Taraba State, was reportedly travelling to Kwara State.
Alhaji Jidda Suleiman, the Chairman of Transportation, Taraba State chapter, said the boat capsized between Chinkai of Benue State and the Anyeci area of Wukari LGA of Taraba State.
” I was told that the fishermen boarded the boat to Kwara state in search of greener pasture, and along the way they had an accident and about 20 people have died,” Alhaji Suleiman said.
Alhaji Suleiman appealed to both the state and federal governments to assist them with life jackets, which he said will help in preventing future occurrences.
Confirming the incident, Isa Muhammed, the Head of Local Government Administration, Ibi LGA, told Radio Nigeria in a telephone conversation that the bodies have been buried in the area where the accident occurred.
He also commiserated with the families of the victims.
In October, a boat conveying over 80 passengers capsized in the Binneri community of Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba.
