NLC, TUC declare nationwide strike from Nov 14

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a total nationwide strike effective next Tuesday, November 14.

Also, the two unions said there will be “national action on Imo State” from Tuesday (Today) from Midnight.

The leadership of the two unions reached the resolution after an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

They said “nationwide mobilisation” of members and allies commenced immediately.

The strike by Organised Labour was in response to the assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero last week in Imo State.
.
Organised Labour had expressed displeasure at the attack, accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of complicity.

Organised Labour gave the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the Police Commissioner, while blaming the attack on Ajaero on Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is running for re-election. However, the governor has since denied any involvement in the assault on the labour leader.

The two labour unions have also demanded the arrest and prosecution of some of Governor Uzodimma’s aides, threatening a nationwide strike if their demands were not met.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, redeployed Mr Barde on Sunday for “neutrality sake” ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Imo State.
