Peter Obi Denied Labour Party 2027 Presidential Ticket

Abuja, NigeriaThe Labour Party (LP) has ruled out the possibility of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, securing the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday, stressing that the LP could survive without Obi. He argued that the wave of support enjoyed by the party in 2023 was driven more by the #EndSARS movement and nationwide dissatisfaction with the Buhari administration than by Obi’s individual popularity.

“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi declared.

The controversy stems from Obi’s advice during the August by-elections, when he urged his supporters to back candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in constituencies where LP had no candidates. While Obi maintained that his position was based on political realities, the party dismissed the move as anti-party activity.

Arabambi further accused LP’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of aligning with Obi, warning that the party would take disciplinary action against them. He also challenged Obi to openly declare his departure from the Labour Party, accusing him of “having one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC.”

He reiterated that Obi was a beneficiary of circumstance in 2023, describing him as “opportuned” to ride on public anger against the Buhari administration. According to Arabambi, the party will chart a new course ahead of 2027, free of what he termed “political extremism.”
