Borno State, Nigeria— Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) has denounced recent Boko Haram assaults in Darajamal community of Bama and Monguno Local Government Areas of Borno State.
The attack on Darajamal village resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and 58 civilians, with numerous abductions mainly involving women and girls. Troops from the North East Joint Task Force ‘Operation Hadin Kai,’ supported by Air Component strikes, swiftly retaliated, reportedly killing over 30 attackers as they fled on Friday night.
A separate strike in Monguno last Thursday claimed the lives of two immigration officers.
Darajamal, a recently reconstructed community along the Bama-Banki road in Borno Central, lies over 100 km from Maiduguri, while Monguno is about 136 km from Maiduguri, in the northern part of Borno Senatorial District.
In a press statement, Senator Ndume expressed shock at the escalating attacks and killings across the state. He offered condolences to the families of all victims, including security personnel, and prayed that Allah grants the deceased eternal peace.
He urged the federal government to prioritize the security, safety, and welfare of all Nigerians during these challenging times.
While commending the sacrifices of troops and security agencies in maintaining peace in Borno, Ndume lamented that many communities in Borno South, North, and Central have been besieged by Boko Haram in recent months— a situation he described as deeply concerning.
Ndume advocated for the continuation and strengthening of Armed Community Defence initiatives to complement military efforts. He emphasized that while Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members, hunters, and vigilantes are dedicated, they are limited by their weaponry— primarily dane guns and sticks—which hampers their ability to confront insurgents effectively.
The senator, formerly Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, reiterated calls for the deployment of drones, attack helicopters, and enhanced Technology, Equipment, Arms, Ammunition, and Motivation (TEAAM) to the Theatre Command as vital measures to end Boko Haram’s prolonged insurgency in Borno, the North East, and Nigeria at large.
He appealed to residents to cooperate fully with military and security agencies, especially by sharing intelligence on terrorist tactics, to further strengthen counterinsurgency efforts.
