David Lammy Appointed UK Deputy Prime Minister Following Angela Rayner’s Resignation

United Kingdom –  David Lammy, the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, has been appointed as the new Deputy Prime Minister, succeeding Angela Rayner who resigned amid a tax controversy.

Lammy’s promotion comes as part of a significant cabinet reshuffle following Rayner’s departure on Friday. Rayner stepped down after admitting to breaching the ministerial code by failing to pay the correct property taxes on her apartment.

The Labour Party, currently trailing behind Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party in recent polls, faces internal challenges after losing Rayner, a prominent left-wing figure and potential future leader. Rayner had served as Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities since July 2024.

In a letter to Labour leader Keir Starmer, Rayner acknowledged her failure to uphold the highest standards expected of public office holders and formally resigned from her leadership and ministerial roles.

Starmer, whose administration has grappled with multiple crises since taking office in July 2024, expressed regret over Rayner’s exit but reaffirmed his commitment to moving the government forward.
