Congo, kasai–The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has reported 15 fatalities in a new Ebola virus outbreak, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
The ministry revealed that among the victims was a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted last month after showing symptoms including high fever and frequent vomiting. She tragically succumbed to multiple organ failure within hours.
The current outbreak, centered in the central Kasai province, has recorded 28 suspected cases, prompting urgent calls from health officials for strict compliance with preventive measures such as regular handwashing and social distancing in affected areas.
This marks the first Ebola resurgence in DR Congo in three years; the previous outbreak resulted in six deaths.
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for Africa, emphasized the need to strengthen health systems, enhance response capabilities, and ensure adequate vaccine supply to combat the outbreak effectively.
The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to provide regular updates and expert guidance to support affected communities and governments during the evolving crisis.
