ADC Urges Justice Over Attacks on Opposition Leaders, Demands Police Refocus on Security

Abuja, NigeriaThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government to direct the Nigeria Police Force back to its core mandate of protecting lives and property, amid rising concerns over alleged intimidation of opposition figures.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned what it described as increasing harassment of its leaders, citing recent developments as deeply troubling for Nigeria’s democratic space.

The ADC specifically criticized the police summons served on former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and the reported violent attack on the convoy of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in Kebbi State.

“At a time when terrorists and criminal elements operate unchecked in many parts of the North, it is disheartening that the Nigeria Police appears more focused on suppressing opposition voices than ensuring the safety of ordinary citizens,” the statement read.

The party further demanded that the police disclose the identities of those behind what it termed “politically motivated complaints,” insisting that failure to prosecute the perpetrators only fuels impunity and erodes democratic principles.

The ADC called for the immediate withdrawal of the police summons issued to El-Rufai and other party members, while urging swift action to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for recent attacks on political figures.
