Gusau, Nigeria — Zamfara State Government has kicked off an oral cholera vaccination campaign targeting six high-risk Local Government Areas (LGAs) heavily affected by a recent cholera outbreak.
Supported by the Federal Government, WHO, UNICEF, and partners, the campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 900,000 people across Gusau, Bungudu, Zurmi, Anka, Talata Mafara, and Shinkafi.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun explained the vaccination is part of a comprehensive response including activating the State Infectious Disease Hospital in Damba, distributing essential medicines, and reinforcing disease surveillance.
The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) will complement medical efforts with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions.
WHO State Coordinator Dr. Raji Mukhtar reported suspected cholera cases in all 14 LGAs, with 85% concentrated in the targeted six LGAs.
The campaign targets individuals aged 1-45 in 20 high-risk wards to break the transmission chain.
Zamfara is one of the worst-affected states amid a worsening cholera crisis in West and Central Africa, with Nigeria reporting over 3,100 suspected cases and 86 deaths by June 2025.
