Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has disclosed that a total of 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence were recorded in the state between August 2024 and July 2025.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, made this known on Friday during a media parley marking the Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, held every September.
Represented by the State Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Hameed Oyenuga, Pedro explained that domestic violence remained the most prevalent issue, accounting for 3,685 cases within the period under review.
He revealed that the youngest survivor was an 18-month-old child, while the oldest was a 79-year-old, a reflection that abuse cuts across all age brackets.
“The state maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence, and our commitment to protecting survivors remains unwavering,” Pedro said.
According to him, Lagos State secured over 140 convictions, issued six restraining orders, and provided counselling for 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence. In addition, 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators received therapy, while 13 persons with disabilities accessed specialised rehabilitation services.
Breaking down the cases, the Attorney General noted that they included 243 instances of defilement, 244 of child abuse and physical assault, 99 rape cases, 48 cases of sexual harassment, 25 cases of sexual assault by penetration, as well as 726 family-related disputes, 41 cyber harassment cases, and 32 threats to life.
Pedro further highlighted that Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo recorded the highest number of adult-related cases, while Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo topped the chart for child-related cases.
