Customs Seize N48.5m Worth of Cannabis, Intercept N220m Contraband in Kaduna

Kaduna, Nigeria-The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 185 blocks of Cannabis Sativa valued at N48.5 million, along with various smuggled goods worth over N220 million, during separate operations in Kaduna State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the unit’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Saidu Nuruddeen, acting on behalf of the Comptroller, the seizures were made in the early hours of August 21. He disclosed that officers, acting on intelligence, stopped a vehicle around the Zaria flyover on the Kaduna–Zaria Expressway and discovered nine sacks containing 185 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 89.6kg. A male suspect was apprehended at the scene.

Nuruddeen confirmed that the illicit substance, with a duty-paid value of N48,562,500, along with the suspect, had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution, in line with inter-agency collaboration protocols.

In a separate operation, the unit also intercepted three vehicles conveying prohibited items, including 456 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 8,100 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 178 bales of second-hand clothing, 225 cartons of spaghetti, 107 used tyres, and 37 electric shock devices. The total duty-paid value of these items was put at N220,457,336.48.

Comptroller Aliyu Mohammed Alkali commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and continuous support. He reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to combating smuggling and protecting the nation’s economy and security from the adverse effects of illegal trade.
