The National Economic Council, established by the 1999 Constitution under Section 153(1) and Part I of the Third Schedule, Paragraphs 18 and 19, serves as a strategic body responsible for advising the President on economic policy and coordinating development initiatives across all tiers of government.
Chaired by the Vice President, NEC comprises the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other co-opted government officials. The council plays a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s economic trajectory, including deliberating on national development strategies and approving the federal government’s annual borrowing and debt management plans.
