Police Recover Explosives, Ammunition; Arrest 33 Suspects in Rivers State

Rivers state, NigeriaThe Rivers State Police Command has announced the recovery of eight explosive devices and over 8,000 rounds of ammunition, alongside the arrest of 33 suspects involved in various criminal activities across the state.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this during a joint security briefing held in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He said the arrests and recoveries were the result of coordinated security operations carried out over the past seven months—January to August 2025—in collaboration with sister security agencies.

According to Adepoju, the intensified operations targeted crimes such as cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, human trafficking, and vandalism. He revealed that several high-profile crimes were successfully disrupted during the State of Emergency declared earlier in the year.

Among the suspects arrested were seven cultists implicated in the killing of Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Bright Owhor, in the D/Line area of the city. The Commissioner identified members of the gang as Prince Samuel (30), Daniel Godwin (25), Henry Peter (24), Godfrey Emmanuel a.k.a. Ibu (30), Chukwu Nneji (34), Justice Dimkpa (27), and Promise Wikere (22). The suspects were also accused of withdrawing funds from the victim’s account using his ATM card.

In a related operation, five suspects were apprehended for vandalising an oil facility in Kpean community, Khana Local Government Area, on August 10, 2025. They were identified as Joseph Nsukpe (38), James Nkpogio (20), Godspower Ngbam (28), Happy Mdor (27), and Apolebabari Ibede (35).

Among the items recovered during the series of raids were three GXI dynamites, four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, eleven MTN SIM cards, a mini-bus, and a Toyota Camry.

Providing a breakdown of total seizures, CP Adepoju listed: 21 AK-47 rifles, 66 locally fabricated guns, eight revolver pistols, two Scorpion sub-machine guns, one LAR rifle, 10 English-made pistols, two GMPs, 67 cartridges, 15 conventional rounds, four magazines, 34 pump-action guns, two Dane guns, and eight explosives.

Commending the cooperation among security agencies including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, NSCDC, and the DSS Adepoju reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining public safety ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.

He appealed to residents to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence to help curb criminal activities across the state.
