Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment: Atiku Seeks Urgent Transport Reforms

Abuja, NigeriaFormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over Tuesday’s passenger train derailment on the Abuja–Kaduna route, urging the Federal Government to embark on urgent reforms to address safety lapses in the nation’s transport system.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, Atiku described the incident — which left at least 14 passengers injured — as deeply troubling, even though no fatalities were recorded.

“I am deeply concerned about the derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train on Tuesday. While it is a relief that no lives were lost, this incident underscores the urgent need for reforms and stronger safety measures,” Atiku stated.

He further called on the government to provide transparent updates on the investigation and implement safety protocols that would restore public confidence in Nigeria’s railway services.

“We need clear updates and a firm commitment to strengthening safety procedures to rebuild trust in our rail infrastructure,” he added.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station. A go-team has since been deployed to collect evidence, engage stakeholders, and investigate the immediate and underlying causes.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, announced that a federal committee has been constituted to probe the derailment, with a mandate to recommend measures to prevent future occurrences and improve the safety and efficiency of rail transport nationwide.
