Manchester United Suffer Shock League Cup Exit to Grimsbys

Grimsby, EnglandManchester United manager Ruben Amorim has apologised to supporters after his side were knocked out of the League Cup in dramatic fashion by fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

United, who trailed 2-0 following a dismal first-half display at Blundell Park, forced extra time when Harry Maguire powered home an 89th-minute equaliser. But after a tense penalty shootout that stretched to sudden death, Grimsby triumphed 12-11 as Bryan Mbeumo struck the bar with United’s final effort.

Despite United’s late rally, Grimsby were praised for their fight and organisation, having outplayed their Premier League visitors for much of the encounter.

“Everything went wrong today. From the way we started, we were not even present on the pitch. The players spoke really loud with their performance about what they want. I just have to apologise to our fans,” Amorim admitted.

The Portuguese coach, already under mounting pressure since his appointment last season, hinted at wider problems within the squad, stressing that expectations may be unrealistic given the challenges of rebuilding.

He acknowledged that goalkeeper Andre Onana, who returned to the starting lineup, was at fault for both Grimsby goals — beaten at his near post for the opener and failing to deal with a cross that led to Tyrell Warren’s tap-in — but refused to blame the Cameroonian solely for the defeat.

“It’s not about Andre. With all due respect, this is a fourth-division side. The issue is bigger than the goalkeeper. It’s about the whole team,” he said.

Amorim said he would use the international break to reflect on the poor start to the campaign, stressing that United must show greater urgency and consistency moving forward.

With United’s League Cup campaign over, the FA Cup now represents their most realistic shot at silverware this season.
