Abuja, Nigeria — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja Zone, has warned that it may embark on an industrial action if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands, including the release of three and a half months’ withheld salaries and full implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
The warning was contained in a statement issued by the Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Salahu Abdullahi, during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
According to Abdullahi, the persistent neglect of Nigeria’s university system by successive administrations poses a grave threat to national development.
“There is a crisis affecting universities in Nigeria, and it is not just ASUU’s problem; it is a national problem. Disregard for education mortgages the future of the nation and endangers generations yet unborn,” he said.
The union reiterated its demands, which include payment of promotion arrears, unconditional release of withheld salaries, settlement of third-party deductions, and the payment of one-year arrears of the 25/35 per cent salary award. It also called for implementation of new conditions of service, adoption of UTAS as the payment platform, and revitalisation of public universities.
Abdullahi further emphasized that underfunding has led to deteriorating infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, poorly equipped laboratories, and uninhabitable hostels, resulting in an unconducive learning environment and a decline in the global ranking of Nigerian universities.
He urged the Federal and State Governments to prioritize education in line with UNESCO recommendations by increasing annual budgetary allocations to the sector.
