Anxiety as 17 Princes Vie for Awujale Throne in Ogun

Ijebu-Ode, Ogun StateFollowing the death of the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II), the longest-serving monarch in the region, a keen contest has emerged among 17 princes from the Fusengbuwa ruling house seeking to succeed him.

Oba Adetona passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, just hours after the death announcement of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He reigned from 1960 until his death and hailed from the Anikinaiya Royal House, one of four ruling houses eligible to produce the Awujale. The others include the Houses of Gbelegbuwa, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote.

According to the Chiefs Law of 1957, the succession rotates among these houses. With the House of Fusengbuwa next in line, they have announced 17 princes as aspirants to the exalted throne. The list includes notable princes such as Adewale Alausa, Ademola Aderibigbe, Taiwo Otun, and Otunba Sakiru Bello, among others.

The selection process is governed by tradition and law, involving rigorous scrutiny before kingmakers nominate one prince. The final approval rests with the Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

This period marks intense lobbying and anticipation as Ijebuland awaits the coronation of its new Awujale, who will continue the legacy of Oba Adetona in overseeing the cultural and socio-economic development of the region.
