Anambra State, Nigeria — A 28-year-old corps member from Delta State, Jennifer Elohor, has recounted how she was viciously beaten, stripped naked, and taken away for interrogation by operatives of Agunechemba, a state-backed security outfit, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident, which occurred on July 23, 2025, reportedly began when the armed operatives stormed the corps members’ lodge, accusing the occupants of engaging in Internet fraud. Elohor, a Zoology graduate from Delta State University, Abraka, spoke for the first time since the attack in an interview, expressing her determination to seek legal redress.
According to her, the masked and gun-wielding operatives forcefully entered the lodge without identifying themselves.
“They barged into our rooms, seized our phones and laptops, and accused us of being ‘Yahoo boys.’ We showed them our NYSC ID cards and uniforms, but they ignored us,” she said.
Elohor disclosed that her insistence on calling the Local Government Inspector infuriated the men, leading to a brutal assault.
“One hit me with a stick, others joined in, beating me with sticks and guns. They tore my clothes, stripped me naked, and dragged me outside. Even when I tried to cover myself, they pulled everything off,” she recounted.
She alleged that the operatives threatened to kill her and other corps members if they resisted or raised an alarm.
“They said they would shoot us and dump our bodies in the bush. I thought I was going to die,” Elohor said, adding that she was taken naked through a bush path to a secret location before being moved to their office.
The corps member narrated that despite repeated pleas and identification as NYSC members, the vigilantes detained nine corps members and demanded “settlement” before releasing them later that evening.
“They fired shots into the air before letting us go. We were barefoot and humiliated,” she stated.
Elohor further alleged that the Local Government Inspector, identified as Mr. Anayo, downplayed the attack and made an insensitive remark suggesting that women should expect such treatment in marriage. She claimed that although authorities later claimed the suspects were arrested, she saw some of the assailants roaming freely the next day.
“I want justice. I want these men prosecuted. What they did was inhumane and degrading,” she vowed.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media after a video of the assault went viral, drawing attention to the vulnerability of corps members in host communities.
