Kebbi, Nigeria —The Kebbi State Government has denied allegations that it distributed sub-standard fertilisers mixed with sand to farmers across the state, describing the claim as false, mischievous, and an attempt to tarnish the image of Governor Nasir Idris’s administration.
In a coversation with journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Sheahu Ma’azu, expressed dismay over the allegation, insisting that the government has never procured or distributed any adulterated fertiliser.
“It is pertinent to note that the state government has not awarded any contract for the procurement of fertilisers. Instead, it procured the commodity directly from reputable indigenous companies for onward distribution to farmers,” Ma’azu explained.
The commissioner advised members of opposition parties to always verify information before making public statements, stressing that misleading farmers with unfounded claims could undermine the government’s efforts to boost food production.
Some members of the African Democratic Congress had earlier alleged that the state government distributed fertilisers mixed with sand, a claim the commissioner dismissed as “totally false and misleading.”
Ma’azu urged farmers and residents to disregard such information, assuring them that Governor Nasir Idris remains committed to providing genuine and high-quality fertilisers free of charge to farmers to enhance productivity and ensure food security.
According to him, three reputable companies, Maccat Agro Limited, Danmadami Fertiliser Blending Plant, and Contect, were engaged by the state government for the supply of fertilisers, while Mairiga Company handled supplies for local governments.
He maintained that the governor’s agricultural support initiatives are designed to improve farmers’ revenue base and strengthen Kebbi’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading food-producing states.
“The allegation is baseless and unfair. The people of Kebbi State should distance themselves from such falsehoods,” Ma’azu declared.
