Afghanistan, Nigeria–At least 76 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating collision involving a passenger bus, a motorcycle, and a fuel truck in western Afghanistan’s Herat province, officials said on Wednesday.
Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, spokesperson for the Herat provincial government, said the accident occurred late Tuesday in the Guzara district, just outside Herat city. “Seventy-six citizens of the country lost their lives in the incident, and three others sustained serious injuries,” Saeedi stated.
Local police reported that the collision, which involved a bus carrying Afghan migrants recently returned from Iran, triggered a massive fire after the vehicle struck a motorcycle and a fuel-laden truck. The bus was en route to Kabul.
The state-run Bakhtar News Agency described the incident as one of the most fatal traffic accidents Afghanistan has witnessed in recent years.
Afghanistan’s roads remain perilous due to decades of conflict that have left infrastructure severely underdeveloped. Reckless driving, poorly maintained highways, and limited enforcement of traffic laws contribute to the country’s high rate of fatal road accidents.
In December 2024, two separate accidents involving a bus, a fuel tanker, and a truck in central Afghanistan claimed at least 52 lives.
According to the UN migration agency, more than 1.5 million Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan so far this year, as both countries have intensified efforts to deport undocumented migrants following decades of hosting them.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tuesday night’s tragedy.
