Athens, Greek — Erik Lamela, the former Roma and Tottenham midfielder, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33 due to chronic hip issues.
Lamela revealed that he had been suffering from hip pain for over a decade, undergoing surgeries on both hips in 2017, with the left side being more severely affected. Despite extensive treatment, including physiotherapy and injections, the pain persisted, forcing him to retire.
While contracted to AEK Athens before ending his playing career, Lamela took to social media to explain his decision. He said, “After years of sacrifice, playing and training in pain has become my norm. For five years, I took medication to manage the pain for every match. Now, I’ve decided to end this chapter.”
Lamela’s career included notable spells at River Plate, Roma, Tottenham, Sevilla—where he won the UEFA Europa League—and AEK Athens. Following his retirement, he is set to join Sevilla’s coaching staff, reuniting with former coach Matías Almeyda.
