Stakeholders Conduct Flood Simulation in Lagos to Boost Resilience

Lagos, NigeriaA multi-agency flood simulation exercise was conducted in Agboyi-Ketu, Lagos, as part of the Italian Government-funded Flood Resilience Project aimed at strengthening preparedness and response capacity in flood-prone communities.

The exercise brought together the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Fire Service, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Ministry of Water Resources, and the Office of Drainage Services.

Mrs. Adebola Kolawole, Lagos State Chairman of NRCS, described the initiative as a landmark opportunity for Lagos, one of 12 states selected under the project, to benefit from international support in addressing recurrent flooding. She emphasized how trained volunteers are now equipped to help households with flood preparedness and emergency response.

Mrs. Kolawole also praised the Italian Government, IFRC, and partners for their role, noting the exercise’s impact on protecting vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.

Mrs. Ibitayo Adenike, Assistant Director of Search and Rescue at NEMA, explained that Agboyi-Ketu’s history of devastating floods motivated the choice for this simulation. She highlighted the importance of coordinated response systems and the exercise’s role in identifying gaps to improve operational effectiveness.

Lieutenant S Agan of the Nigerian Navy underscored the force’s preparedness for disaster response, including search and rescue operations supported by divers and equipment with security escorts.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that continuous collaboration and capacity building will enhance flood-prone Lagos communities’ ability to protect lives and property in emergencies.
