Nantes, France — Super Eagles defender Chigozie Awaziem featured prominently as FC Nantes were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in a closely contested Ligue 1 match on Sunday night.
Awaziem was solid at the back, making timely tackles that thwarted PSG’s early attempts to break the deadlock. Nantes came close to scoring in the 34th minute when Bahereba Guirassy’s shot missed the target. However, PSG eventually capitalized on their dominant possession when Vitinha scored in the 67th minute, a strike that clipped Awaziem and wrong-footed Nantes’ goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
PSG’s Gonçalo Ramos later thought he had extended their lead, but the goal was disallowed after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Nantes pushed hard in attack but could not find an equalizer, allowing PSG to claim maximum points.
Awaziem played throughout the game under the guidance of Nantes’ new Portuguese coach Luis Castro. His compatriot, midfielder Chidera Ejuke, also participated, coming on as a substitute.
Nantes will look to bounce back when they host Getafe in their next league fixture on Monday, August 25.
