Kaduna, Nigeria — Security agencies in Kaduna have arrested a suspected People’s Democratic Party (PDP) agent, Shehu Fantagi, for allegedly attempting to influence voters ahead of today’s by-elections with a large sum of cash.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that Fantagi was apprehended on Friday evening at a hotel in the Kaduna metropolis while coordinating the distribution of approximately N30 million believed to be intended for vote-buying in the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency election.
“At about 03:30 hours today, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), arrested one Shehu Aliyu Fantagi at a popular hotel along Turunku Road and recovered a total sum of Twenty-Five Million, Nine Hundred and Sixty-Three Thousand Naira (₦25,963,000),” the statement revealed.
Authorities said preliminary investigations indicated that the cash was earmarked to bribe eligible voters. The suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation and pleaded for leniency.
Kaduna State Police Commissioner, CP Rabiu Muhammad, expressed appreciation to the security agencies for their swift collaborative efforts. He warned that anyone attempting to undermine the electoral process, regardless of position or status, would face the full force of the law.
The police command reassured Kaduna residents of their commitment to ensuring maximum security before, during, and after the elections, urging citizens to exercise their franchise peacefully and lawfully without fear or intimidation.
