Abuja, Nigeria–Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has voiced her dissatisfaction over the continued delay in the disbursement of financial rewards promised to the team following their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory.
Speaking in a forthcoming episode of With Chude, hosted by broadcaster Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade disclosed that the players are yet to receive the $100,000 cash reward and other entitlements pledged by the government.
“We have not received our money. All the promises made back and forth have yet to materialize,” Ajibade stated, adding that although the funds were reportedly approved, no disbursement has been made to the players.
The 24-year-old emphasized that the delay has left many of the team members in difficult situations. “People are struggling. Even our match bonuses remain unpaid. Everything is still pending,” she lamented.
Following the Super Falcons’ record 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, President Bola Tinubu in July 2024 announced a $100,000 cash reward for each player in recognition of their achievement, along with additional bonuses.
Ajibade also shed light on the financial struggles female footballers face in Nigeria, revealing that she spent a decade playing for FC Robo Queens in the Nigeria Women’s Football League without receiving a salary.
Describing those years as “a tough moment,” Ajibade recounted growing up in a crowded compound in Mushin, Lagos, where she had to perform menial jobs, including cleaning bathrooms, to support herself.
Ajibade began her career at FC Robo Queens before moving to Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL at the age of 17. She currently plays for Atlético Madrid Femenino in Spain.
