FG Appointed KWAM 1 Aviation Security Ambassador to Promote Responsible Conduct — Keyamo

Abuja, NigeriaThe Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has explained the rationale behind the Federal Government’s decision to appoint Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security and proper passenger conduct.

The move follows a series of recent incidents involving unruly behavior at Nigerian airports, including KWAM 1’s alleged obstruction of a ValueJet aircraft on August 5, and a separate case involving Comfort Emmanson, a passenger who was filmed acting aggressively toward an air hostess aboard an Ibom Air flight.

Keyamo stated that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reviewed KWAM 1’s case and decided to reduce his flight ban to one month, taking into account appeals from well-meaning Nigerians and the musician’s public show of remorse. As part of efforts to improve passenger behavior, KWAM 1 will now support awareness campaigns on acceptable conduct within the aviation sector.

Addressing criticisms on social media accusing the government of favoritism, the minister took to his official X handle on Wednesday to clarify the nature of the ambassadorial role. “It is common practice globally for a repentant offender to publicly advocate against the behavior they once exhibited. It is a form of community service — voluntary, unpaid, and symbolic,” he said.

Keyamo also noted that the role does not confer any official status or privileges. “Unfortunately, in Nigeria, some assume the term ‘ambassador’ implies a high-ranking position with benefits. That is not the case here,” he added.

He further disclosed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) are considering a similar gesture toward Ms. Comfort Emmanson, who was recently released from custody after showing remorse. “AON is exploring the possibility of engaging Ms. Emmanson as an ambassador for responsible passenger behavior. It will be up to the operators to determine the modalities,” Keyamo stated.

The minister concluded by affirming that the ministry has acted fairly in addressing both incidents and remains committed to promoting discipline and civility across the nation’s aviation sector.
