Abuja, Nigeria — Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has dismissed speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan making a political comeback ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that Nigeria’s problems cannot be solved by a change in leadership alone.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Farotimi argued that without tackling the country’s deep-rooted structural flaws, any leader — no matter their capability — would fail to deliver meaningful change.
“A thousand Goodluck Ebele Jonathans cannot fix Nigeria. Even if you multiplied his brain power by a thousand, without addressing our structural problems and telling ourselves the hard truths, nothing will change,” he stated.
Recalling Jonathan’s 2015 removal, Farotimi noted that despite promises of a better Nigeria, the same challenges persist. “They can recycle these people as often as they wish. This was the same Jonathan once vilified by the press, the pulpit, and the mosque — yet removing him solved nothing,” he said.
He further warned that removing current President Bola Tinubu without reforming the political system would only continue the cycle of failure. “All this talk about Jonathan is just another distraction from the political ‘ruinning’ class,” he argued.
Farotimi stressed that the nation needs strong institutions, not a political “messiah,” questioning how a leader once branded a failure could now be seen as a saviour. “Ten years have gone full cycle, and we’re back saying we were better off where we were,” he concluded.
