Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Disputes Virgil van Dijk’s Call for Another Striker

Liverpool, England Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly disagreed with captain Virgil van Dijk’s recent call for the club to sign an additional striker ahead of the Premier League season.

Van Dijk, speaking after Liverpool’s Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace, expressed the view that Liverpool need another forward following the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. He emphasized that adding attacking reinforcements would help balance the squad.

However, in an interview with talkSPORT, Slot offered a contrasting perspective, stating, “I think we have more than enough options to be good enough to win again. This is where I focus on myself. With the players we have, we should be able to win, to score. That’s actually what we did as well. We scored twice (against Palace), and last season we only scored one against them, away and at home.”

Slot did point out, though, that the defensive record during pre-season was a concern: “It’s not a concern about offensive quality, but when I look at the amount of goals we’ve conceded in pre-season—that’s not our standard.”

Despite van Dijk’s call for new attacking additions like Alexander Isak, who Liverpool have reportedly pursued, Slot’s remarks indicate confidence in the current squad’s ability to deliver offensively while signaling that defensive solidity requires attention.

This divergence showcases differing viewpoints within the Liverpool camp ahead of the new season, as the club balances strengthening its attack with shoring up defensive weaknesses observed in pre-season.
