Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has lauded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their qualification for the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament—marking their fifth consecutive appearance in the championship game.
The defending champions secured their place in the final after a hard-fought 75–68 victory over Senegal in Saturday’s semi-final held at the Palais des Sports, Treichville, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the team’s unwavering dedication, noting that their consistent success has brought immense pride to Nigeria and elevated the nation’s standing in African women’s basketball.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” Tinubu remarked.
The President also celebrated the team’s advancement to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments, set to hold in March 2026.
Tinubu gave special recognition to Head Coach Rena Wakama, praising her leadership and groundbreaking role as the team’s first female head coach.
“I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he stated.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports development, Tinubu expressed full support for D’Tigress as they aim to clinch their fifth consecutive AfroBasket crown and seventh overall.
