Kogi State, Nigeria — A 27-year-old man, Yayu Musa, has been arrested by a local vigilante group for allegedly murdering his mother-in-law in cold blood over a marital dispute related to infertility.
The tragic incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday in the Olla community, Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to local sources, Musa lured his 50-year-old mother-in-law, Atayi Abdul, to her farm under the pretext that unknown individuals were stealing her crops. Upon her arrival, he allegedly attacked her with a machete, killing and mutilating her body before fleeing the scene.
A viral video recorded by members of the community vigilante team showed the aftermath of the brutal murder. The vigilante group immediately launched a manhunt and successfully apprehended the suspect in a neighboring village where he had taken refuge.
In a recorded confession, the suspect claimed his actions were driven by anger and frustration. He alleged that his mother-in-law had threatened to give his wife, Umi Idris, to another man due to her inability to conceive, despite his financial sacrifices in seeking medical solutions for her fertility challenges.
“I sold my motorcycle and spent all I had to help my wife get pregnant,” Musa said. “But my mother-in-law told me I’m not man enough and vowed to give her daughter to someone else. I couldn’t bear it, because I truly love my wife.”
While the Kogi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP William Ayah, could not be reached for comments, a senior police officer, speaking under condition of anonymity, confirmed that the suspect has been transferred to Lokoja, the state capital, for further investigation and prosecution.
