U.S. Mission Warns Nigerians Against Using Visas for Birth Tourism

U. S , NigeriaThe United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a warning to visa applicants, stating that individuals seeking to travel primarily to give birth in the U.S. in order to obtain citizenship for their child will be denied entry.

In a notice shared on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, @USinNigeria, the mission emphasized that consular officers are instructed to refuse visa applications if there is reason to believe the applicant’s main intent is birth tourism.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will acquire U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they determine this to be your primary travel purpose.”

The advisory forms part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to curb visa misuse and uphold the integrity of its immigration policies. The mission reiterated its commitment to enforcing existing regulations and ensuring that all applicants comply with the lawful terms of their visas.
