Yenagoa, Bayelsa— Concern mounts over the prolonged detention of former domestic workers of ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan, as legal delays continue to obstruct the path to justice.
The alarm was raised by Funmi Adedoyin, legal counsel to the defendants, who expressed deep dissatisfaction with the stalled trial, now adjourned for the 42nd time since 2019.
Addressing the media, Adedoyin explained that the most recent adjournments—scheduled for June 25 and 26—were disrupted following the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, who was kidnapped on June 21 in front of an eatery in Yenagoa.
The case, which has been ongoing for over six years, involves allegations of theft and other serious crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, and armed robbery. The items in question include jewellery, household electronics, and furniture reportedly worth ₦200 million.
The accused—15 individuals, including Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, and Tamunosiki Achese—remain detained at the Okaka Custodial Centre, with no resolution in sight.
Adedoyin, who has remained vocal in her pursuit of timely justice, lamented the toll of repeated delays on both the legal process and the personal lives of the defendants. “We are not happy about these delays,” she stated. “Over 40 adjournments have occurred. We want them to get justice, and we will not back down.”
Calling for judicial reform and renewed urgency, Adedoyin emphasized the importance of legal advocacy and public awareness, especially as the court calendar nears its August recess.
Relatives of the detained have also voiced frustration. Gladys Achese, whose sister is among those awaiting trial, described the ordeal as “draining” and “frustrating,” stressing the emotional and psychological burden on families.
“They didn’t go to court throughout last month,” Achese said. “We don’t know the next date, and time is running. We are simply stuck.”
The case has become a symbol of Nigeria’s struggling judicial system, prompting calls for systemic reform and improved access to justice for all citizens.
