Ibadan, Nigeria — The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to quality basic education through the massive construction and renovation of classroom blocks across all 33 Local Government Areas of the state.
The announcement was made by Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.
In a statement issued by Mr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Adeniran revealed that the board had secured approval to embark on far-reaching infrastructural projects aimed at enhancing teaching and learning in public basic schools across the state.
Dr. Adeniran noted that since the inception of Governor Makinde’s administration in 2019, Oyo State has witnessed significant strides in the education sector through strategic investments in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and training, and the provision of critical learning materials.
He emphasized that over 289 blocks of classrooms have been constructed, 229 renovated, and more than 60 model schools established, alongside the provision of 22,962 pupils’ desks and benches, 1,189 teachers’ furniture, 138 boreholes, and digital learning tools, underscoring the government’s holistic approach.
“The administration’s vision is clear—to drastically reduce the number of out-of-school children and improve the learning environment for all,” Dr. Adeniran said. “Thanks to the consistent payment of UBEC counterpart funds and participation in the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme, Oyo is making measurable progress.”
As part of new initiatives approved for execution in 2025, Dr. Adeniran disclosed that the state will undertake the construction of 41 new classroom blocks, renovation of 60 existing ones, erection of 7 perimeter fences, drilling of 30 boreholes, and the procurement of 5,828 desks and 473 teachers’ tables and chairs.
Additionally, under the BESDA reward initiative, the board is set to commence the construction of 28 new classroom blocks, renovation of 29 others, installation of four-compartment toilets, drilling of 16 boreholes with water tanks, and delivery of 2,922 desks and 182 teachers’ chairs.
Dr. Adeniran expressed optimism that these efforts will not only improve the state’s education infrastructure but also uplift learning outcomes across Oyo’s public primary schools.
