Buhari Laid to Rest Amid National Mourning

Daura, Katsina StateNigeria bid farewell to one of its most influential statesmen, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was buried on Tuesday evening in his hometown of Daura following state and Islamic funeral rites.

The solemn burial, which took place in the courtyard of his private residence at approximately 5:50 p.m., fulfilled his personal wish to be interred at home, rather than in a public cemetery or national monument. The late leader’s remains, wrapped in the green-white-green colours of the Nigerian flag, were lowered into the earth after traditional prayers and military honours.

A 21-gun salute rang out in tribute, while the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, delivered Buhari’s citation before a crowd of dignitaries.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the delegation of top government officials and African leaders at the ceremony, which included Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, House Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and governors from across the federation.

Notable international attendees included Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, and former President Issoufou Mahamadou.

President Tinubu had earlier received the late president’s body at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina at 1:51 p.m., after arriving to inspect a military guard of honour. The casket, draped in the national flag, was carried by a combined team of military pallbearers through a ceremonial procession before being transported to Daura.

Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital, was Nigeria’s former military ruler (1983–1985) and two-term civilian president (2015–2023). His death marked the end of a consequential era in Nigerian governance and political life.

His final resting place in Daura symbolizes not just a return to his roots but the closing chapter of a lifetime of public service.
