Daura, Katsina State — Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has revealed that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari experienced peace of mind and a sense of relief after leaving office in 2023.
In a tribute shared during an interview with DCL Hausa following Buhari’s passing, Governor Radda recalled regular visits to the former president at his Daura residence. He described Buhari as light-hearted and patriotic, often reflecting on the burdens of leadership and the importance of integrity.
“He was always jovial. Each time we met, he shared wise counsel and emphasized honesty in governance,” Radda said. “He used to tell me that life was more peaceful outside the presidency and often said, ‘Only God can save Nigeria.’”
According to Radda, Buhari once expressed empathy for his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he understood the weight of the office and commended Tinubu’s courage in implementing policies like fuel subsidy removal—something Buhari himself had attempted but could not execute.
“Buhari told me, ‘Bola is a courageous man, he did what I couldn’t do,’” the governor shared.
LEADERSHIP reports that former President Buhari died in London on Sunday at the age of 82. His remains were brought back to Nigeria on Tuesday and received by a federal delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
State burial rites were observed in his honour before his final interment in his hometown of Daura.
