London, United Kingdom— Nigeria grieves the loss of its former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who died this afternoon in a London clinic where he had been receiving medical care.
The news was first shared on X by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, and later confirmed by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu. “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR … May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement read.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari initially led Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985. Three decades later, he returned as a civilian leader, making history in 2015 by defeating an incumbent president at the polls.
His 2015–2023 presidency was defined by a high-profile anti-corruption campaign and an unrelenting fight against insurgency, even as the nation weathered one of its toughest economic periods.
Funeral plans will be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites.
