The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has decided to suspend its planned nationwide strike for three months, following an appeal by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Services, Muhammad Pate. This decision was part of the resolutions made during MDCAN’s 13th Biennial Delegates Meeting held in Kano.
President of MDCAN, Prof. Aminu Muhammad, stated that the association extended the ultimatum by three months to give the Federal Government time to address pending issues. If the government fails to address these concerns within the specified timeframe, MDCAN will proceed with its next course of action.
One of the key issues discussed was the problem of brain drain in the medical profession, with over 500 highly trained doctors and consultants leaving Nigeria. The association appealed to the government to provide incentives and take measures to retain healthcare professionals in the country.
Furthermore, MDCAN emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, adequate funding, and better remuneration for staff in medical education. They called on all levels of government to address these challenges.
The demands raised by MDCAN include the correction of remuneration discrepancies for Clinical Lecturers (Honorary Consultants) and the implementation of an upward review of CONMESS (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) that considers inflation and other factors.
Overall, MDCAN’s decision to suspend the strike reflects their willingness to engage with the government to address these critical issues in the healthcare sector.
