Supreme Court Affirms Okpebholo as Edo Governor

Abuja, Nigeria The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Governor of Edo State, bringing an end to months of legal contention.

The decision was delivered today in Abuja by the apex court, solidifying the outcome of the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election and dismissing all appeals challenging Okpebholo’s victory.

In the lead judgment read by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the court ruled that the petition filed by the opposition lacked merit and failed to provide sufficient evidence to overturn the election result.

“This court finds no compelling reason to interfere with the ruling of the Court of Appeal,” Justice Kekere-Ekun stated. “The will of the people, as expressed through the ballot, must be upheld.”

Governor Okpebholo, who ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following a tightly contested poll.

Reacting to the verdict, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the judiciary for what he described as a triumph of democracy and justice. He reiterated his commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development for the people of Edo State.

“I remain deeply honored by the trust reposed in me by the people,” he said. “With this judgment, our focus must now return fully to delivering on our promises and uniting our state.”

The Supreme Court’s ruling marks the final chapter in the legal battle over the Edo governorship, affirming the integrity of the electoral process and reinforcing public confidence in the nation’s judicial system.

The statement concluded with a renewed appeal for unity and collective effort to move Edo State forward under a mandate now judicially certified.
