Ibadan, Nigeria: The recent passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland marks the end of an era and signals the commencement of the traditional succession process for the revered throne.
In accordance with the well-established Ibadan chieftaincy hierarchy, the next in line to ascend the throne is the current Otun Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. A respected statesman and prominent figure in both the traditional and political spheres of Oyo State, Chief Ladoja previously served as the Governor of the state.
His ascension, pending formal announcement and confirmation, is expected to uphold the longstanding tradition of peaceful and orderly succession within the Olubadan system.
In August 2024, during a radio program titled Agbami Oselu, Chief Ladoja expressed confidence in his destined path to the throne, emphasizing faith in divine will and the support of the people of Ibadan.
“By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan,” he stated during the live broadcast. “There is no obstacle that can prevent what God has ordained.”
Reflecting on the historical context, Ladoja referenced past disputes during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, asserting that traditional authority rests with the Olubadan, not the state government.
He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the will of the people, adding that while many individuals have held senior chieftaincy titles such as Balogun or Otun Olubadan, not all were destined to ascend the throne. “Everything is determined by God,” he said. “There have been others before me who were close, but it was not their destiny.”
Chief Ladoja’s anticipated installation will mark a significant chapter in Ibadan’s history, further cementing the city’s adherence to tradition and its unique rotational leadership structure.
