Abuja, Nigeria — Veteran entertainer and social activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as CharlyBoy, has launched a national campaign to promote prostate cancer screening and improve men’s health awareness across Nigeria.
The announcement was made during an interview in Abuja on Saturday, where CharlyBoy revealed that the initiative—spearheaded by the CharlyBoy Foundation—seeks to address the rising cases of prostate-related health issues among Nigerian men, many of whom suffer in silence.
Having recently survived prostate cancer himself, the septuagenarian described the campaign as deeply personal and essential to breaking the stigma surrounding men’s health in the country.
“We are in the middle of a silent epidemic,” CharlyBoy stated. “Too many men are suffering quietly because they don’t talk about their health. It’s time we changed that narrative.”
He emphasized the importance of early detection through voluntary screening, mental health advocacy, and open dialogue about issues often ignored. According to him, the foundation currently runs mobile outreach programmes in rural communities, collaborates with labs nationwide, and utilizes digital platforms to educate and engage the public.
Reflecting on the socioeconomic realities facing many Nigerians, CharlyBoy said poverty often delays critical health interventions. He noted that part of the foundation’s efforts includes assisting with medical bills, encouraging regular checkups, and providing free screenings to underserved communities.
“In the twilight of my life, I’ve decided this is what I want to do—save lives by raising awareness. We’re calling on privileged Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to join us in this cause,” he said.
The Foundation’s CEO, Dr. Doris Udenzi-Davis, also revealed that over 500 men have already benefitted from the free screening programme. She called on government agencies, philanthropists, and volunteers to support the initiative.
“This is not a task we can handle alone. We need partnerships, donations, and volunteers to extend our reach and deepen our impact,” she said.
The CharlyBoy Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health and dignity of Nigerian men, pledging to continue its outreach efforts and advocacy until prostate health becomes a national priority.
