Casablanca, Morocco — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has introduced a brand-new trophy ahead of the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to take place in Morocco.
The unveiling took place on Wednesday, July 2, in Morocco as anticipation builds for this year’s tournament.
According to a statement on CAF’s official website, the new trophy draws inspiration from the iconic Men’s TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy. It symbolizes much more than just a prize—it stands for equality, unity, and excellence in African women’s football.
This launch aligns with CAF’s leadership vision to advance and expand women’s football across the continent, aiming to position African women’s football among the world’s elite.
The trophy was officially presented during a special ceremony hosted by CAF and its longstanding partner, TotalEnergies, in Casablanca.
Design Symbolism and Features
The trophy’s design is marked by elegant petals spiraling upwards, each representing a competing national team. Together, these petals form a blooming flower, a timeless emblem of growth, empowerment, and beauty—reflecting the journey and resilience of African women footballers.
At the center of this floral design lies a golden sphere, subtly patterned like a football and adorned with a gleaming gold map of Africa. This sphere embodies the continent’s pride, ambition, and its growing influence in women’s football on the global stage.
Crafted from brilliant silver and matte gold, the trophy’s body is encircled by a gold ring engraved with the CAF logo, symbolizing the confederation’s unwavering commitment to uplifting women’s football across all 54 member nations.
The base of the trophy is a pristine white marble pedestal accented with gold stripes. It features the competition’s name in sophisticated matte gold lettering, solidifying the legacy of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations within African sports history.
Super Falcons Aim for Record 10th WAFCON Title
After securing fourth place in the 2022 WAFCON, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are targeting their 10th championship in this year’s tournament in Morocco.
The Super Falcons remain the most decorated team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, boasting nine titles to date.
Under the leadership of the late Ismaila Mabo, Nigeria won the inaugural WAFCON in 1998 as hosts, defeating Ghana 2-0 in the final.
Besides Nigeria, only Equatorial Guinea and South Africa have lifted the WAFCON trophy. Equatorial Guinea claimed titles in 2008 and 2012, while South Africa emerged as champions in 2022.
The 2024 tournament is scheduled to run from July 5 to July 26.
Nigeria has been drawn into Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. The Super Falcons will kick off their campaign on July 6 against Tunisia.
