Abuja, Nigeria — Key figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened on Tuesday evening in a high-level closed-door meeting, signaling renewed political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, brought together notable PDP stakeholders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, David Mark; and former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.
Though the agenda was not officially disclosed, the timing—coming just a day after the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) endorsed Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s return as National Secretary—has fueled speculations of a possible coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Other prominent attendees included former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; former Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi); as well as Chief Tom Ikimi.
Reports also suggest that David Mark is being considered for the role of acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which may serve as a potential coalition vehicle.
Additional party chieftains present at the meeting were former National Organising Secretary, Senator Austin Akobundu; former acting National Secretary, Senator Ben Obi; ex-National Women Leader, Josephine Anenih; former Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan; and former Youth Leader, Abdullahi Maibasira.
The deliberations are believed to be part of broader efforts to strengthen the opposition’s prospects ahead of 2027.
