Paul Pogba Joins Monaco in Bid to Relaunch Football Career

MonacoFrench midfielder Paul Pogba has signed a two-year contract with Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, marking his return to professional football after nearly two years away from the game.

The 2018 World Cup winner’s move to Monaco was confirmed by the club on Saturday, offering Pogba a fresh start following a turbulent period marked by injuries, an 18-month suspension for doping, and an extortion plot in which he was a victim.

Pogba, 32, had seen limited action in recent seasons, making just 12 appearances over the last three years. His contract with Juventus was terminated after he failed a drug test in August 2023, but he has been eligible to play again since March this year.

This transfer marks Pogba’s first stint in Ligue 1 at the senior level. Expressing his eagerness to return to top form, Pogba told French media last weekend, “I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready. It’s just a matter of time.”

Pogba began his football journey with Le Havre’s youth setup before moving to Manchester United in 2009. After limited opportunities at Old Trafford, he joined Juventus in 2012, where he won four straight Serie A titles. He returned to Manchester United in 2016 for what was then a world-record fee of €105 million ($123 million), before re-signing with Juventus three years ago—a spell hampered by recurring injuries.

Off the pitch, Pogba’s family life also faced turmoil. In 2024, his brother Mathias received a three-year prison sentence, with two years suspended, for attempting to extort €13 million from him in 2022.

On the international stage, Pogba has been a key figure for France, earning 91 caps and scoring 11 goals, including a memorable strike in the 2018 World Cup final victory over Croatia.

Monaco, who secured third place in Ligue 1 last season, will compete in the UEFA Champions League in the upcoming campaign, providing Pogba with a platform to showcase his talents on Europe’s biggest stage.
