Van Nistelrooy Departs Leicester City Following Relegation

Leicester, EnglandRuud van Nistelrooy has stepped down as manager of Leicester City following the club’s relegation from the English Premier League, the club confirmed on Friday.

According to an official statement released by the club, Van Nistelrooy’s departure was the outcome of a mutual agreement between both parties, resulting in the immediate termination of his contract.

The 48-year-old Dutchman took charge of the Foxes in late November 2024, following a short interim stint as caretaker manager at Manchester United. Despite efforts to steady the ship, Van Nistelrooy was unable to prevent Leicester’s drop back to the EFL Championship, just one season after their return to top-flight football.

“Ruud took on a demanding assignment with professionalism and integrity,” the club’s statement read. “From day one, he demonstrated a deep commitment to the club’s vision, including promoting talented players from our academy into the senior squad.”

Leicester City expressed its appreciation for Van Nistelrooy’s contributions during a particularly turbulent phase and extended its best wishes to him for future endeavors. The club emphasized that he leaves with “the full respect and gratitude” of everyone at King Power Stadium.

In a farewell message, Van Nistelrooy expressed his thanks to the club community: “I am grateful to the players, coaching staff, academy personnel, and everyone I worked with at Leicester City. Their professionalism and support meant a great deal during my time here.”

The club is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as it prepares for life in the Championship and aims for a swift return to the Premier League.
