Owerri, Nigeria — Tragedy struck at the Eke Ubaheze market in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, as an explosion from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.
The blast, which occurred on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, around 2:30 p.m., has triggered panic across Ubaheze and neighboring communities. Witnesses report that the explosive was unknowingly activated by a local trader, Ms. Ngozi Umeh, who stepped on the device while moving through the busy market square.
Initial accounts from local residents indicate that at least six people lost their lives in the incident, with several others suffering varying degrees of injuries. The tragic event has heightened fears in the region, especially given the ongoing insecurity challenges in the area.
In a formal response, the Imo State Police Command, through its spokesperson Mr. Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and stated that a full-scale investigation is underway. According to the command, preliminary findings suggest that the IED may have been planted by elements linked to the proscribed IPOB/ESN groups.
Mr. Okoye confirmed that Ngozi Umeh, the woman who triggered the explosion, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Five other individuals who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical care.
Reacting swiftly to the emergency, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma mobilized tactical operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Orlu and Orsu Divisions, and other tactical teams, to secure the scene, evacuate victims, and conduct a thorough sweep for additional explosives. Authorities have since declared the area safe, and commercial activities have gradually resumed under tightened security.
Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been directed to lead an in-depth investigation aimed at uncovering the perpetrators of the attack and bringing them to justice.
Commissioner Danjuma extended his condolences to the family of the late Ms. Umeh and expressed his hope for the swift recovery of the injured. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to eliminating all criminal threats within Imo State.
Residents of Orsu and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and continue with their lawful activities, as proactive security measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences.
