Tax reform :FIRS changes name to Nigeria Revenue Service

Abuja, NigeriaPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a landmark transformation in Nigeria’s tax administration system, formally renaming the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the Nigeria Revenue Service.

This major development follows the President’s assent to a suite of four comprehensive tax reform bills aimed at overhauling the nation’s fiscal framework.

The newly signed legislations include:

Nigeria Tax Bill,Nigeria Tax Administration Bill,Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.

Speaking on the significance of the new laws, President Tinubu emphasized that the reforms are designed to bring about Nigeria’s first broad-based, people-centered tax relief, particularly targeted at low-income earners, small enterprises, and struggling households.

He affirmed that the bills mark a pivotal shift toward a more inclusive and growth-oriented tax system, aligning with his administration’s economic renewal agenda. The newly established Nigeria Revenue Service is expected to play a critical role in ensuring efficient revenue collection and equitable distribution in the evolving tax landscape.

President Tinubu described the reforms as the foundation for a new economic direction, designed to ease the burden on citizens while enhancing national revenue strategy.

The full implementation of the tax reform laws is slated to begin on January 1, 2026, setting the stage for a modernized fiscal environment in the new year.
