2027: Barau Says He’ll Follow Tinubu’s Lead

Abuja, Nigeria:Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has pledged unwavering loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, stating he would fully support any decision the President makes regarding the 2027 general election, including a potential selection of him as running mate.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Barau responded to growing calls from political groups urging President Tinubu to consider him for the vice-presidential slot in the upcoming election cycle.

“Whatever the President asks me to do, I will do it—100 per cent. He is my political father,” Barau said. “If he calls on me to work with him, I will simply say, ‘Thank you, sir,’ and I will do it.”

While acknowledging the endorsements, the Kano-born lawmaker emphasized that the focus should remain on governance rather than premature political discussions. “It is too early to talk about 2027 politics. Our priority now is to support the President in delivering good governance,” he added.

Barau praised President Tinubu’s leadership, noting his efforts to address inherited national challenges. “Mr President is working hard to reposition Nigeria. He is a kind-hearted and open-minded leader who supported me during difficult times in Kano,” he said. “When he succeeds, we all succeed.”

He also advised political support groups advocating for his candidacy to channel their efforts toward supporting the administration’s developmental agenda. “There will be time for politics. For now, let us focus on governance,” he reiterated.

Barau reaffirmed his commitment to the values of the progressive political movement and underscored loyalty as a core principle of his political life. “I am a progressive to the core, and loyalty is something I cherish deeply. I am 100 per cent loyal to Mr President,” he said.

The briefing also addressed preparations for the upcoming zonal public hearings of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, which Barau said would review 59 bills and 31 proposals submitted so far.

Public hearings will take place across the six geopolitical zones, with venues and chairpersons as follows: Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom (South-South) – chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or his representative; Kano (North-West) – chaired by Barau Jibrin; Lagos (South-West) – chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele; Jos (North-Central) – chaired by Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru; Maiduguri (North-East) – chaired by Chief Whip Tahir Monguno; and Enugu (South-East) – chaired by Deputy Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi.

The hearings aim to gather public input on proposed constitutional amendments through the submission of memoranda and stakeholder engagement across the regions.
