Iran, Nigeria: Israeli authorities have arrested a 22-year-old student on suspicion of espionage and committing security offences on behalf of Iranian intelligence.
The suspect, a resident of the Arab village of Deir al-Asad in northern Israel, was studying information systems at Ben Gurion University in Beersheba. His arrest was confirmed on Thursday in a joint statement released by Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, and the police.
According to the statement, the student had allegedly maintained contact with an Iranian intelligence operative over several months and was compensated for carrying out “security-related tasks” at the agent’s instruction.
Among the alleged activities were an attempted physical assault, placing nails on a major road in Beersheba, and efforts to incite social division. The suspect reportedly claimed his actions were driven by solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The arrest took place in June, though officials did not clarify whether it occurred before or during the recent 12-day flare-up between Israel and Iran.
Authorities said formal charges will be filed, adding that the case highlights ongoing concerns about Iranian intelligence activities targeting Israeli citizens.
Israel has reported several similar espionage cases in recent years involving alleged operatives working for or on behalf of Iran.
