Lagos Assembly Clerk urges FRSC to ramp up efforts on road safety

The Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to increase its efforts in ensuring long-lasting road safety. During a recent visit by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Babatunde Farinloye, Onafeko commended the corps for their surveillance and accident prevention work. He also requested that the Sector Commander address reports of harassment of Lagosians by FRSC officers on the roads and emphasized the importance of educating motorists on road safety. Onafeko expressed concerns about Nigeria’s high road mortality rate and the perception that the FRSC is deviating from its primary safety role due to revenue targets. He called for a civil approach by traffic enforcement agencies and assured the FRSC of the Assembly’s collaboration.

On the other hand, Mr. Farinloye sought the House of Assembly’s assistance in addressing the activities of “area boys” on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, including driving against traffic, indiscriminate parking, and hawking. He requested legislative measures to curb street trading and the recklessness of commercial bus drivers. Farinloye emphasized that these actions would lead to improved traffic flow and road safety. In response to allegations of charging high fines, the Sector Commander clarified that the FRSC’s fines are lower than those of other traffic enforcement agencies.
