Kano TikTok Star Sentenced to One Year Over Indecent Content

Kano, NigeriaA Kano magistrate court has handed down a one-year prison sentence to popular TikTok creator Abubakar Usman Kilina, following his conviction for promoting indecency and featuring cross-dressers in a controversial video posted on the platform.

Presiding over the case at Court No. 21, Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan also offered Kilina an alternative to incarceration—a ₦100,000 fine—alongside a ₦30,000 compensation fee to be paid to the Kano State Film Censorship Board. The compensation, according to the court, was imposed for “wasting the agency’s time” during the legal proceedings.

The sentencing follows a formal complaint filed by the Kano State Film Censorship Board, which accused Kilina of breaching public morality laws and circulating offensive content online. Reports by Freedom Radio state that the video in question was flagged for promoting inappropriate behavior and using language deemed unsuitable for public consumption.

Magistrate Hadiza, in her ruling, sternly warned the social media influencer against repeating such offenses, emphasizing that any future breach would attract the full weight of the law without the option of a fine.

“Content creation must not come at the expense of societal values. The court will not hesitate to impose maximum penalties if this behavior persists,” she declared during the sentencing.

The ruling has sparked heated conversations on social media, with some defending Kilina’s freedom of expression while others support the court’s decision as a necessary step in preserving cultural and moral standards.
